KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 (Bernama) -- Hainan Airlines has launched a direct air route between Haikou, the capital of South China’s Hainan Province, and Osaka in Japan.
The airlines uses a Boeing 737-800 aircraft and operates flights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday on a weekly basis.
According to the Hainan Province’s Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports, the maiden flight Thursday took off at 8.40am BJT before arriving in Osaka at 1.40pm JPT and returning to Haikou at 7.15pm BJT after departing from Osaka at 2.40pm JPT on the same day.
This marks Hainan Airlines’ first international flight this year. The airlines has so far, opened a number of international routes linking Haikou with cities, including Rome, Singapore, Sydney and Melbourne.
Last December, Hainan Province had a total of 74 international air routes. Next year, the province aims to increase the number to 100.
China plans to transform Hainan into an international tourism and consumption centre by 2025 and a globally influential tourism and consumption destination by 2035.
According to a three-year action plan released last June, Hainan aims to attract two million overseas tourists, with an average 25 per cent annual growth rate by 2020.
