FedEx autonomous robot, future of doorstep delivery
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- To meet the rapidly changing needs of consumers, FedEx Corp. has developed an autonomous delivery device, the FedEx SameDay Bot, helping retailers make the same-day and last-mile deliveries to their customers.
Collaborating with companies such as AutoZone, Lowe’s, Pizza Hut, Target, Walgreens and Walmart, the retailers could accept orders from nearby customers and deliver them by bot directly to customer homes or businesses on the same day.
“The FedEx SameDay Bot is an innovation designed to change the face of local delivery and help retailers efficiently address their customers’ rising expectations,” said FedEx executive vice-president and chief marketing and communications officer, Brie Carere.
The bot features include pedestrian-safe technology from the iBot, plus advanced technology such as LiDAR and multiple cameras, allowing the zero-emission, battery-powered bot to be aware of its surroundings.
These features are coupled with machine-learning algorithms to detect and avoid obstacles, plot a safe path and allow the bot to follow road and safety rules.
Proprietary technology makes the bot highly capable, allowing it to navigate unpaved surfaces, curbs and even steps for an extraordinary door-to-door delivery experience.
FedEx Office currently offers a SameDay City service, operating in 32 markets and 1,900 cities using FedEx vehicles and uniformed employees. In spite of this, the bot will complement the FedEx SameDay City service.
The FedEx bot is jointly developed with DEKA Development & Research Corp. and its founder Dean Kamen, an inventor of many life-changing technologies, including the iBot™ Personal Mobility Device and the Segway®.
FedEx will test the bot this summer in select markets, including Memphis, Tennessee, pending final city approval. The initial test will involve deliveries between selected FedEx Office locations.
More details can be found at thefuturefedex.com.

Mercer's study: top work trends of leading companies revealed
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- Four top trends currently pursued by leading companies in 2019 d comprise aligning work to future value, building brand resonance, curating the work experience and delivering talent-led change, says Mercer’s 2019 Global Talent Trends study.
According to the advice and technology-driven solutions provider, artificial intelligence and automation will continue to transform the competitive landscape. Hence, in aligning work to future value, 60 per cent of companies plan to automate more work in the next 12 months.
Successful companies also ensure their brand resonates with all workforce segments - 68 per cent of high-growth organisations differentiate their talent value proposition to different groups (such as contingent workers), compared to 47 per cent of modest-growth companies.
Meanwhile, more than half (56 per cent) of employees want curated learning to help them evolve their skills and prepare for future jobs.
The study has also found 61 per cent of human resource (HR) leaders involved in planning the roll-out of major change projects and 54 per cent involved in executing those plans.
Yet, only two in five HR leaders participated in the idea generation stage of transformation initiatives.
In today’s climate of uncertainty, employees seek stability. The study also found job security as one of the top three reasons employees joined and stayed in a company.
“Over the last few years, organisations have moved from anticipation to action in preparing for the future of work. But they risk bewildering people with too much change, ignoring the values individuals admire, and inundating them with endless process,” said Mercer’s Career business president, Ilya Bonic.
“The future of work is about connectivity, creating a work environment that appeals to today’s workforce by building a coherent sense of identity, sparking connections, and using data to personalise the experience,” said Mercer Career Global Solutions Leader, Kate Bravery.
The study shares insights from over 7,300 senior business executives, HR leaders and employees from nine key industries and 16 geographies globally. Download the report at https://www.mercer.com/global-talent-trends.

MGRC, Clinipath announce affordable genetic screening test for breast, ovarian cancers
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Genomics Resource Centre Berhad (MGRC) and subsidiary, Clinipath Sdn Bhd have announced the availability of Dtect BRCA+, an affordable genetic screening test that examines key genes associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancers.
According to a statement, positive results from Dtect BRCA+ may identify a need for regular, pathology surveillance to catch either of these diseases early when they are easiest to treat, and may also be useful to encourage positive lifestyle changes to mitigate the risk of hereditary breast cancer or ovarian cancer from occurring.
Early detection and treatment of breast cancer and ovarian cancer (at Stage 1) can led to a five-year relative survival rate of 87.5 per cent and 82.8 per cent, respectively, according to a Health Ministry study.
The study on cancer incidence and survival rates published by the ministry in 2018, which was observed at any age above 40, also found that the mortality rate for breast cancer was 43.3 per cent, while it was 52.9 per cent for ovarian cancer.
Symptoms for breast cancer may include swelling of all or part of a breast, skin irritation, thickening of the nipple or breast skin and abnormal nipple discharge while symptoms for ovarian cancer may include abdominal bloating, indigestion, increased urge to urinate, constipation and menstrual irregularities.
The public-listed healthcare company, MGRC and Clinipath continue to work together to make comprehensive pathology services, and the latest in genetic testing for doctors to improve the lives of patients in Malaysia and the region.

Featurespace technology to outsmart Singapore's fraudsters
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- Singapore is home to one of the world’s highest card fraud. Hence, the island republic’s financial industry in 2017 committed to data analytics to combat financial crime.
In line with this commitment, fraud detection and risk management solutions provider, Featurespace launched a groundbreaking, anti-fraud technology into the Singapore market.
The technological platform uses machine learning to detect anomalies in individual behaviour for fraud and risk management. It was first developed by the world’s leading computer scientists in Cambridge University, England.
Featurespace’s real-time ARIC™ platform uses Adaptive Behavioural Analytics to self-learn and continuously respond to new customer data.
By understanding the behaviour of each individual banking and credit card customer, ARIC identifies new and known attacks and nips fraud in the bud, while accepting more genuine businesses.
As such, ARIC reduces false positives by 70 per cent, increasing revenue and reducing customer friction.
Featurespace chief executive officer, Martina King said millions of Singaporeans fell victim to a myriad of large-scale fraud attacks in the recent past.
“By implementing machine learning technology, we can help banks and credit card providers outsmart the criminals and build safer banking infrastructure.”
According to the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Industry Partnership, lenders are looking at using data analytics to detect suspicious transactions because current systems mistakenly identify fraud, resulting in declined transactions.

DoubleVerify buys Zentrick to better service advertisers, publishers
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- Marketing measurement software and analytics provider, DoubleVerify (DV) is all geared to drive seamless execution and performance of online video advertising.
For this purpose, DV has acquired digital video technology company, Zentrick. The transaction was completed as an all cash, all stock offered on Feb 15.
Upon acquisition, Zentrick engineering teams will continue to operate from offices in Ghent, Belgium, providing middleware solutions for the world’s largest brands, platforms and publishers.
The solutions reduce video breakage by more than 50 per cent, by shortening load times and eliminating multiple forms of latency that prevent a video ad from delivering.
Greater ad delivery maximises advertiser performance and revenue yield for publishers. Zentrick software further enables publishers to detect and resolve issues behind breakages as they occur.
“DV’s mission is to power the new standard of marketing performance, giving advertisers clarity and confidence in their digital investment,” said DV chief executive officer, Wayne Gattinella.
He said eliminating ad breakage had a direct effect on the performance of online advertising that would resonate throughout the ecosystem.
Zentrick co-founder, Pieter Mees said integrating its digital video technology and expertise with DV’s industry-wide platform would accelerate Zentrick’s efforts to simplify and streamline ad performance.
Video advertising spend soared to US$28 billion last year. However, the ecosystem necessary to support the growth in video ad delivery has become highly fragmented. (US$1 = RM4.07)

HITACHI METALS DEVELOPS CERAMICS ADSORPTION FILTER FOR PRETREATMENT OF THE SWRO (SEA WATER REVERSE OSMOSIS) DESALINATION SYSTEM
TOKYO, Feb 15 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Hitachi Metals, Ltd. (TOKYO:5486) has developed a ceramics adsorption filter (CAF) as a pre-treatment technology for the sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination process in order to minimize fouling of RO membranes*1. A joint research study conducted by Hitachi Metals Ltd, Japan and the Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) have shown that with the addition of CAF in the pre-treatment stage prior to the RO stage, the rate of RO fouling was slower and hence the membrane cleaning frequency can be reduced. The findings have shown that the amount of biofilm attached on the RO membrane was significantly reduced. This is expected to reduce water production cost. Hitachi Metals will accelerate efforts toward commercial applications, and will expand the business in Singapore, which is the center of research of the water treatment technologies.
1. Background
Due to the population growth, economic growth, and climate change, water shortage has become a global issue. One of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations is to ensure the accessibility to clean water and improve in water quality and price.*2
Seawater desalination is one of the approaches to access to clean water. Currently, most seawater desalination systems use RO membranes. When seawater is desalinated using RO membranes, organic matter and other contaminants in the seawater may adhere to the membrane surface, a phenomenon known as fouling. The consequences of fouling include decrease in productivity, increase energy use, compromised water quality and shorten membrane life. All of these translate to higher water production cost. One of the key factors determining the degree of fouling on RO membrane is the RO feed water quality. As such, an effective pretreatment process is necessary prior to the RO system to ensure the fouling of RO membranes is minimized.
2. Overview
Against this backdrop, Hitachi Metals has developed a pre-treatment filter that aims to minimize fouling of RO membranes, known as the CAF. The CAF is a filter which has porous partition walls coated with an adsorbent material. Unlike the conventional filtration method which based on size exclusion to physically remove substances larger than the size of the pores, CAF utilizes a chemical action, namely adsorption, to selectively remove dissolved organic matter that is likely to be negatively charged, regardless of its size.
Hitachi Metals and NEWRI conducted parallel comparison on RO performances for seawater treated with UF*3 alone and the other seawater treated with UF followed by CAF system. The comparison studies have shown that the fouling rate of RO membranes can be reduced. The slower in fouling rate indicates that the RO cleaning frequency can be potentially reduced by half or more if CAF is used in between the UF membrane and RO membrane. This will likely cut down the operating cost of seawater desalination plants and improve the capacity utilization, resulting in lower water production cost.
Comment from Assistant Professor Chong Tzyy Haur, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Deputy Director, Singapore Membrane Technology Centre, Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute, Nanyang Technological University
“Desalinated water is an important source of water. NEWRI is pleased to collaborate with Hitachi Metals to explore technologies that can improve the process efficiency which ultimately lead to lower cost of water production. We are excited about the commitment from HM to expand its business in Singapore.”
Comment from Mr. Koji Sato, Vice President and Executive Officer and CTO of Hitachi Metals
“The global community faces a major issue in coping with environmental, energy, and resource problems to achieve sustainable growth. I am very pleased that we have made a step forward to solve the social issue of water shortage in collaboration with NEWRI. We remain committed to contributing to the future development of society by unleashing the potential of materials.”

JUMIO LAUNCHES FIRST END-TO-END BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION SOLUTION COUPLING IDENTITY PROOFING WITH ONGOING 3D FACE AUTHENTICATION
Jumio Authentication enables users to verify themselves during high-risk transactions and unlock everything from online accounts to rental cars, replacing passwords on any device.
LONDON, Feb 12 (Bernama-GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Jumio, the leading AI-powered trusted identity as a service provider, today announces the launch of Jumio Authentication. This new video-selfie authentication solution is the first in the market to leverage biometrics for initial identity proofing and ongoing user authentication — creating an online experience that is fast, secure, accurate and easy to use.
This secure and rapid authentication method is ideal for account logins and high-risk scenarios (e.g., logging in from a foreign IP address or authorising high-risk transactions such as wire transfers and online purchases). Secure selfie authentication can also be used to unlock doors (rental cars), self check-in (hotels), e-learning (online test taking) and continuous security (e.g., re-verifying the identity of ride-sharing drivers on a frequent basis).
“As more of our important interactions move online, establishing trust digitally has become critical,” said Stephen Stuut, CEO of Jumio. “Jumio is pioneering selfie-based authentication to allow businesses to leverage biometric user data captured during enrolment and re-verify that data in the future. With our new selfie-based authentication, users are not required to repeat the identity proofing process again — they just take a quick selfie — and as the digital chain of trust grows, so does the security level.”
Biometric authentication is the verification of enough unique human traits to physically prove a user is actually who they claim to be. It offers far greater security than previous step-up methods, such as knowledge-based authentication and multi-factor authentication, which remain vulnerable to imposters, credential phishing, large-scale data breaches, dark web user data dumps and man-in-the middle attacks.
But past attempts at biometric authentication have had their own vulnerabilities, as fraudsters have quickly learned to fool online identity verification solutions with spoofing attacks (e.g. using a photo, video or mask of the authorised person’s face). This is why it’s increasingly imperative to check whether the correct user is physically present during the account set-up (enrolment) process.
To combat this emerging threat, Jumio integrated the world’s first and only iBeta Level 1 and Level 2 Certified anti-spoofing technology, ZoOm® 3D Face Login with TrueLiveness Detection from FaceTec, into its online identity verification suite to capture and process the user’s face images taken from any 2D mobile device camera or webcam. These face frames are then reconstituted to create a 3D face map which contains over 100 times more liveness data than a 2D photo.
With Jumio Authentication, the digital chain of trust starts at enrolment when an online user takes a photo of their government-issued ID (driver’s license, passport or ID card) and then takes a video-selfie, which is instantly analysed via AI to determine that they are living human and not a spoof. The selfie is compared to the picture on the ID document to reliably establish the digital identity of the new user.
Later when the user wants to log into their account or whenever a high-risk transaction occurs, Jumio Authentication allows the user to take another video-selfie (where a new 3D face map is created), which is then compared to the original face map, verifying the user and unlocking the account in seconds.
“Data breaches have put hundreds of millions of personal records and passwords into the hands of fraudsters, but biometric technology, especially face authentication, holds universal promise for solving our user access security challenges,” said Kevin Alan Tussy, CEO of FaceTec. “ZoOm provides Jumio’s customers with 3D face authentication featuring iBeta/NIST Level 1&2 Certified Liveness Detection based on the ISO 30107 standard, making it secure enough to replace passwords, knowledge-based authentication, and even SMS-based two-factor authentication on over 10 billion supported devices.”
In fact, Gartner predicts that “By 2023, identity corroboration hubs will displace existing authentication platforms in over 50% of large and global enterprises.” [Source: Gartner Identity and Access Management Summit, Dec. 4, “Transform User Authentication With a CARTA Approach to Identity Corroboration,” Ant Allan]

Note to Editors: FaceTec is the first and only biometric authentication solution provider to achieve Level 1 and Level 2 anti-spoofing results in NIST/NVLAP-certified iBeta Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) Testing. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce and is one of the nation’s oldest physical science laboratories. Following a 100 percent Level 1 anti-spoofing certification in August 2018, the rigorous Level 2 test validates the effectiveness of anti-spoofing Liveness Detection technology against realistic 3D artifacts and masks worn by living human testers. The iBeta PAD certification is the only test guided by the ISO 30107 global biometric testing standard.
Passing the Level 1 and Level 2 PAD tests required ZoOm to successfully stop more than 3,300 spoof attempts over 12 days of rigorous testing with sophisticated attacks using digital and paper photos, high-res video, life-like dolls and realistic latex masks. No spoof attempts were able to fool the system and ZoOm achieved a perfect 100 percent anti-spoofing score over both tests.
