JUNIPER RESEARCH: NFT TRANSACTIONS TO REACH 40 MILLION GLOBALLY BY 2027; LIMITED BY MARKET CONTROVERSY
Metaverse Adoption Driving Modest 64% Growth After Crypto Slump
An NFT is a unique token that exists on the blockchain, meaning it cannot be replicated. This unique token could represent real-world items like artworks or music, with the ability to be traded with a transparent transaction history.
· To find out more, see new research report: NFTs: Future Opportunities, Segment Analysis & Market Forecasts 2022-2027
· For more insights, download our free whitepaper: NFTs ~ Seizing the Metaverse Opportunity
Major Concerns Regarding Environmental Impact and Scams
The report stresses that vendors who partake in the NFT space may risk brand damage by association, due to the role NFTs have had in illegal activities, such as money laundering, scams and fraud. Environmental issues were also raised as a major concern, with the current way transactions are facilitated on the blockchain creating massive energy usage.
It emphasised the need for regulators to work with industry bodies to standardise processes with reduced environmental impact and built-in consumer protections to enable vendors to utilise NFTs as a medium to further engage with consumers.
Metaverse to Be a Redeeming Factor to the Long-term Success of NFTs
The report predicts metaverse-linked NFTs will be the fastest-growing NFT segment over the next 5 years; increasing from 600,000 transactions in 2022 to 9.8 million by 2027. It highlights rising demand for immersive experiences as a driver of metaverse adoption.
To capitalise on this growth, the research urges consumer-facing businesses to create NFT‑based content to meet changing demands from a younger, tech-savvy demographic, who are more ready to purchase novel forms of online and digital content.

BEST'S MARKET SEGMENT REPORT: AM BEST MAINTAINS STABLE OUTLOOK ON MALAYSIA'S NON-LIFE INSURANCE SEGMENT
SINGAPORE, Aug 4 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- AM Best is maintaining a stable market segment outlook on the Malaysian non-life insurance industry due to its underwriting discipline and the market’s recovery following the economic fallout from COVID-19.
The Best’s Market Segment Report, “Market Segment Outlook: Malaysia Non-Life Insurance,” states that non-life gross written premium rose by 4.0% to MYR 21.97 billion (USD 4.95 billion) in 2021, 44% of which was driven by the general takaful segment. The increase follows a contraction in non-life premiums in 2020 and was driven by a recovery in most lines of business, especially fire, engineering and the growing motor takaful segment. Over the near to medium term, AM Best expects the segment’s growth to be supported by the country’s economic recovery and increased insurance penetration. Whilst economic growth has rebounded with the lifting of prolonged COVID-19-related social and business restrictions, the increased adoption of digitalisation has improved the ease of policy subscriptions and is helping to raise insurance penetration.Prospectively, key lines of business, in particular motor and fire insurance are expected to drive the growth of the non-life insurance segment. Following the end of movement restrictions and lock-downs, motor insurance business is likely to expand over the near term, supported by growing new vehicle sales."
“Given the hardening of reinsurance rates for fire coverage in recent periods, primary insurers have been moderately increasing the pricing for fire,” said Susan Tan, financial analyst, AM Best. “Price increases for the fire line peaked in the fourth quarter of 2021 following the December flood event in Malaysia.”
The risk of capital market volatility remains and is likely to be subject to the ongoing global development and management of the pandemic and deteriorating supply chain issues. In response to these market conditions, AM Best expects non-life insurers to continue monitoring their underlying risk exposure to various investment classes, as well as actively adjust and refine their portfolio allocation as part of their risk management.
“As economic activity resumes with the easing of lock-down measures, a rise in claims frequency is likely to drive a contraction of underwriting profit,” said Kanika Thukral, senior financial analyst, AM Best. “However, AM Best expects that non-life insurers in Malaysia will maintain underwriting and pricing discipline.”

Electric vehicle battery pack shipments to hit 30 mln in 2027 - Juniper Research
The research identified falling vehicle costs, often directly caused by government subsidies, and increasing awareness around the environmental impact of current mobility services as key drivers behind the growth in EV battery production.
The research predicts that growth will be strongest within the commercial segment, with commercial EV battery pack shipments growing from 1.4 million in 2022 to over seven million by 2027.
Mass electrification of fleet vehicles is required for meeting corporate decarbonisation goals and will drive investment into EVs from enterprises.
In turn, this provides an opportunity for manufacturers to develop batteries designed for energy-intensive commercial use cases.
In a statement, research co-author Damla Sat said: “Developing longer range vehicles by leveraging higher capacity battery packs will be critical to meeting expectations that foster commercial vehicle electrification, but will require extensive investment to develop new battery pack technologies.”
The research predicts that for EVs to reach mass adoption across commercial use cases, including heavy goods haulage and passenger transport, scaling the production of new battery technologies is essential.
This includes solid-state batteries and new chemical mixes.
